چکیده

Introduction. The relentless progress of Moore’s Law has periodically inspired major innovations – both in hardware and software – at specific points in time to keep performance growth on pace with transistor density. Industry has reached another such point as it encounters intellectual and engineering challenges in the form of power dissipation, processor-memory performance gap, limits to instruction level parallelism, slower frequency growth, and rising non-recurring engineering costs. As a consequence, when we consider how the large number of transistors that will be supplied at future technology nodes will be used to sustain performance growth, there are some inevitable trends, including i) replication of cores, ii) the use of high volume custom accelerators due to the fact that these devices have small footprint and dramatically less power consumption, and iii) innovations in memory hierarchies. The preceding collectively inspire the development of heterogeneous many-core platforms (HVM) – large scale, heterogeneous systems comprised of homogeneous general purpose cores intermingled with customized heterogeneous cores – accelerators, and using diverse memory and cache hierarchies. Such will be the case both on chip as well as in rack scale and multirack scale systems.

Efficient parallelization of the genetic algorithm solution of traveling salesman problem on multi-core and many-core systems

Efficient parallelization of genetic algorithms (GAs) on state-of-the-art multi-threading or many-threading platforms is a challenge due to the difficulty of schedulation of hardware resources regarding the concurrency of threads. In this paper, for resolving the problem, a novel method is proposed, which parallelizes the GA by designing three concurrent kernels, each of which running some depe...

Design and Optimization of Scientific Applications for Highly Heterogeneous and Hierarchical Hpc Platforms Using Functional Computation Performance Models

HPC platforms are getting increasingly heterogeneous and hierarchical. The main source of heterogeneity in many individual computing nodes is due to the utilization of specialized accelerators such as GPUs alongside general purpose CPUs. Heterogeneous many-core processors will be another source of intra-node heterogeneity in the near future. As modern HPC clusters become more heterogeneous, due...

OpenMP performance analysis for many-core platforms with non-uniform memory access

One of the first steps in embedded-system design flow is to choose the most efficient implementation of the embedded software application. However, this is difficult to do at the earliest design stages because particular details of the final manycore HW platform are usually unknown and many possible mappings of the software tasks/threads have to be evaluated. This paper presents a complete fram...

Scalable I/O Virtualization via Self-Virtualizing Devices

The virtualization of I/O devices is an integral part of system virtualization. This includes both virtualizing the physical devices and managing them across multiple guest virtual machines (VMs) or domains running on top of a virtual machine monitor (VMM) or hypervisor (HV). This paper presents the notion of self-virtualizing devices, where for higher end, ‘smart’ I/O devices, selected virtual...
